Set any tab’s volume to 600%

Chrome stops at 100%.

Loudness doesn’t. Every tab gets its own volume, from silent to six times louder, without the crackle. Press play, then drag the fader.

Add to Chrome, it’s free No ads. No account. Nothing leaves your computer. Also on Microsoft Edge Chrome on phones doesn’t run extensions. Add it on your computer.

Best with headphones. Drag the fader, or use the arrow keys.

When 100% isn’t loud enough

Some tabs are quiet even with every volume control at the top. Pick one to hear how much room Loudness adds.

Loud shouldn’t mean broken.

Most boosters multiply the sound until it crackles. Loudness has a limiter that catches the peaks first, so 600% still sounds like music. Switch it off to hear the difference.

Press play to see the sound

Both play at 600%, so turn your computer’s volume down a little first.

Change the volume from your keyboard

The shortcuts work on the tab you’re watching, even in fullscreen. They work on this page too, so try them now.

Alt Shift ↑ Louder
Alt Shift ↓ Quieter
Alt Shift M Mute or unmute

Each press moves 10%. You can change the step, or the keys, in Loudness’s settings.

It only hears what you ask it to

Loudness asks for no website access. It changes a tab’s sound only after you click its icon or press its shortcut on that tab.

Questions

Anything else? Support has quick fixes, and a person reads every email.

Is it really free?

Yes. No ads, no account, no premium tier. Loudness is made by Mutables, a small studio, and it stays free.

Why does a tab show a blue icon while I adjust it?

That’s Chrome telling you the tab’s sound runs through an extension. Loudness only changes the volume. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.

Will very high levels damage my speakers?

The built-in limiter catches the peaks that cause crackling, so boosted sound stays clean. Still, go easy at the top of the scale: small speakers and your ears both have limits.

What happens to fullscreen video?

While a tab is adjusted, Chrome may keep fullscreen video inside the window. Press F11 (⌃⌘F on a Mac) to fill the screen, or set the tab back to 100% and Loudness hands the sound back to Chrome a moment later.

Does it work on every site?

On any site that plays sound in a tab: YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, Google Meet, Zoom, podcasts, lectures. Chrome doesn’t allow extensions on its own pages (chrome://) or on the Chrome Web Store.

Can it remember a level for a site?

Yes, if you turn on per-site memory in its settings. Levels are stored on your computer only and never synced.

Why does it need the “tabs” permission?

To list the tabs that are playing sound, so you can switch to one or adjust it from the popup. Loudness can’t read or change the pages themselves.
