Quick fixes

“Open Loudness on this tab first”

Chrome only lets an extension change a tab’s sound after you click its icon on that tab. Click the Loudness icon in the toolbar while you’re on the tab, or press Alt+Shift+Up (⌥⇧↑ on a Mac) there.

“Another extension is using this tab’s sound”

Only one extension can take a tab’s sound at a time. Turn off screen recorders or other volume extensions for that tab, then try again.

Video won’t go fullscreen

While a tab is adjusted, Chrome may keep fullscreen video inside the window. Press F11 (⌃⌘F on a Mac) to fill the screen, or set the tab back to 100% and Loudness hands the sound back to Chrome a moment later.

There’s a blue icon on the tab

That’s Chrome showing that the tab’s sound runs through an extension. It goes away when the tab is back at 100%. Nothing is recorded.

It won’t work on a page

Chrome doesn’t allow extensions to change sound on its own pages (chrome://) or on the Chrome Web Store. Everywhere else, it works on any tab that plays sound.

Boosted sound crackles

Check that the limiter is on: it’s the Limiter switch in the popup, and “Clarity limiter” in settings. If it still distorts, the speakers are at their limit. Turn the tab down a little.

The shortcuts don’t do anything

Another extension may already use them. Pick different keys at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.

Why does Chrome say it can read my tabs?

To list which tabs are playing sound, Loudness reads their titles, addresses and icons. It can’t read or change what’s on the pages, and nothing leaves your computer. See the privacy policy.
