How do I make a Google Meet or Zoom call louder?
If the call is still too quiet with your computer at full volume, boost the call’s tab. Loudness turns a Google Meet or Zoom tab in Chrome up to 600%, and its Voice switch makes speech clearer, while your other tabs stay as they are. It works on calls in a Chrome tab, not in the Zoom desktop app.
Set this page’s volume to 180%
Press play, then drag past 100%.
Laptop speakers top out early. Past 100% is the headroom Loudness gives the call tab.
Best with headphones. Drag the fader, or use the arrow keys.
Why calls are so quiet
Laptop speakers are small, and voices on calls are compressed and often quiet to begin with. Someone far from their microphone, or on a cheap headset, can be hard to hear even when everything is at maximum.
Chrome’s volume can’t go past 100%, and turning up your whole computer makes every other sound louder too, including notifications.
How to turn up a call
- Join the call in Chrome: meet.google.com, or Zoom’s web client at app.zoom.us.
- Click the Loudness icon in the toolbar while you’re on the call’s tab.
- Drag the fader until people are easy to hear. 150% to 250% is usually plenty.
- Turn on Voice to lift speech above the background noise.

Worth checking first
- Google Meet’s speaker setting: in the call, open More options, then Settings, then Audio, and check the right speaker is picked.
- Zoom’s web client has its own speaker volume under the arrow next to the microphone.
- Bluetooth headsets sometimes switch to a quieter call mode. Try your laptop’s speakers to compare.
