Loudness never sends your data anywhere. It has no account, no server, no analytics and no error reporting, and it makes no network requests. To do its job, it handles some data on your computer only, and nothing it handles or keeps is sent to us or anyone else.
The data it handles, on your computer only
The Chrome Web Store asks every extension to list this, even when it never leaves your device:
- Website content: the sound of a tab you adjust, so Loudness can change its volume.
- Personal communications: if that tab is a call, such as Google Meet or Zoom in the browser, its sound is part of what Loudness adjusts. It is not recorded or kept.
- Web history: the title, address and icon of open tabs that are playing sound, shown in the popup, and, only if you turn on per-site memory, the names of the sites you set a level for.
Loudness uses this data only to change the volume of your tabs. It doesn’t sell it, share it, transfer it, or use it for anything else, including advertising or credit decisions.
What it can hear
Loudness changes a tab’s sound only after you click its icon or press one of its shortcuts on that tab. Chrome allows nothing else. The sound is processed on your computer and played straight to your speakers. It is never recorded, saved or sent anywhere.
What it reads
To show which tabs are playing sound, Loudness reads the title, address and icon of your open tabs. That stays inside its popup.
Loudness asks for no website access. It can’t read or change the content of the pages you visit.
What it stores
- Synced with Chrome sync, so your settings follow you to your other computers: maximum boost, shortcut step, whether the limiter starts on, whether the toolbar badge shows, whether per-site memory is on, and whether you dismissed the fullscreen tip.
- On this computer only: the level and switches you set for a tab while it’s open; if you turn on per-site memory, the name of each site and the level you gave it (you can forget them all in settings); whether Chrome’s toolbar is light or dark, so the icon matches; the number on your onboarding keepsake card; and how many times you’ve boosted a tab and on which days, so Loudness can ask once for a review, and your answer.
The permissions Chrome lists
-
tabCapture: to route a tab’s sound through Loudness and change its volume. tabs: to list the tabs that are playing sound.offscreen: to run the sound processing in a hidden extension page.storage: to keep the settings above.
What it does not do
- It does not read your history, bookmarks or the pages you visit.
- It does not record sound.
- It does not send anything anywhere, and contains no analytics, ads or third-party code.
Removing Loudness deletes what it stored on this computer.
