For Chrome and Edge

Pick which new tab opens.

Chrome only uses the new tab extension you installed last. Hallway keeps Momentum, Earth View, daily.dev and the rest installed, and lets you pick the one that opens on ⌘T.

Customize Chrome
01

The last one installed wins.

Chrome gives the new tab to the extension you installed last. To change it, you open chrome://extensions and turn the others off by hand.

02

Hallway flips the switches for you.

Pick a door and that new tab turns on. The others turn off, but stay installed with their settings.

03

Try new ones, or go back to Chrome’s.

A new tab extension you install gets its own door, with one click back to what you had. Chrome’s own new tab is the last door.

How it works

What one click changes

The one you pick turns on and the others turn off. Nothing else changes. Try it: open a door.

After your last switch
  • Momentum On Off, settings kept
  • Earth View On Off, settings kept
  • Infinity New Tab On Off, settings kept
  • daily.dev On Off, settings kept
  • Bonjourr On Off, settings kept
  • Tabliss On Off, settings kept
  • BirdTab On Off, settings kept
  • Chrome’s own new tab Showing Replaced
  • Every other extensionNot touched
  • Managed by your organizationNever touched
Opens like it’s the only one
No redirect, no flash. The new tab comes straight from the extension, with the address bar ready for typing.
Switches in about 120 ms
From your click to the new page on your next new tab, in our tests.
Puts things back if a switch fails
Everything goes back the way it was, so you’re never left without a new tab.

Once it’s installed

Switch from any tab

Pin Hallway to the toolbar, click it, and pick. This is its popup, and it works here too.

Private by design

Nothing leaves your browser

Hallway has no account, no server, no analytics and no error reporting, and it makes no network requests. Removing it deletes what it kept on your computer.

Why Chrome warns you

That’s Chrome’s wording for the permission to turn extensions on and off. Hallway uses it to find your new tab extensions and switch between them. It never installs or removes anything, and it doesn’t read your tabs, history or bookmarks.

Questions

Before you install

Something else? Support has quick fixes, and a person answers email.

Which new tab extensions does it work with?

Any extension that replaces the new tab, like Momentum, Earth View, Infinity New Tab, Speed Dial, daily.dev, Bonjourr, Tabliss, or one you built yourself. Hallway asks Chrome which ones do, and asks you if Chrome can’t tell.

Will I lose my settings in the ones I switch away from?

No. Turning an extension off leaves its storage alone, so its settings are there when you switch back.

Do I have to set anything up?

No. Hallway finds your new tab extensions on its own. You confirm the list, and that’s it.

Will my new tab be slower?

No. The new tab comes straight from the extension you picked, with no redirect. A switch takes about 120 ms in our tests.

Chrome asked “Change back to Google?” What do I click?

Click “Keep it”. Chrome sometimes asks after a new tab extension takes over. Hallway shows a tip about it after your first switch.

Can my new tab be a website, like Notion or a dashboard?

Yes, with Tabshift, from the same people: any web address as your new tab. It shows up in Hallway on its own, so your page can take turns with BirdTab, Momentum or any other. Meet Tabshift

Does it work in Edge? Firefox?

Chrome and Microsoft Edge, yes. Firefox, not yet: it only lets extensions turn themes on and off, not other extensions.

Step into your Hallway.

Keep every new tab you love, and open the one you want.

Momentum opens on every new tab.

Open another tab with +, press ⌥⇧N for the next one, or switch from the Hallway button in the toolbar.
