How do I change the volume of just one tab in Chrome?
Chrome itself can only mute a site: right-click the tab and choose Mute site. To set a tab’s volume anywhere between silent and louder than normal, use an extension. Loudness gives every tab its own volume, from 0% to 600%, and lists every tab that’s playing so you can adjust any of them from one place.
Set this page’s volume to 60%
Press play, then set a level.
Turn it down to keep music in the background, or past 100% to boost it. Other tabs stay as they are.
Best with headphones. Drag the fader, or use the arrow keys.
What Chrome can and can’t do
Chrome has one control per tab: Mute site, in the tab’s right-click menu. It’s all or nothing, and it mutes every tab from that site.
Your computer’s volume changes everything at once. There’s no built-in way to keep a video loud while a playlist plays quietly in another tab.
How to set a tab’s volume
- Add Loudness to Chrome.
- On the tab you want to change, click the Loudness icon.
- Drag the fader, or pick a preset: Off, 50%, 100%, 200%, 400% or 600%.
- Under Playing now, change any other tab that’s making sound, or jump to it.

Good to know
- The toolbar icon shows a small badge, such as 60 or 250, on every tab that isn’t at 100%.
- Set a tab back to 100% and Loudness hands its sound back to Chrome a moment later.
- Turn on per-site memory to have a site start at the level you gave it last time.
