Tabshift
Add to Chrome, it’s free

Almost in Firefox Add-ons.

Tabshift for Firefox is on its way to addons.mozilla.org. This button will take you straight to it the moment it’s live.

Support

Something not working, or a page Tabshift won’t open? Email hello@mutabl.es and a person will reply.

It helps to say which address you set, and your browser and its version (at chrome://version, edge://version or, in Firefox, about:support).

Quick fixes

Chrome asked “Change back to Google?” and Tabshift stopped working

The button Chrome highlights, Change it back, turns Tabshift off. Turn it back on at chrome://extensions, open a new tab, and this time click Keep it. Chrome remembers the answer. The question may also read “Did you mean to change this page?”.

On Edge, a bubble by the toolbar asks “Is this the new tab you expected?”. Choose Keep changes. If Edge turned Tabshift off, turn it back on at edge://extensions.

On Firefox, a notice from the menu button says “Your new tab has changed.” Choose Keep Changes. Its other button, Manage New Tabs, opens Firefox’s new tab settings and leaves Tabshift on. If Tabshift was turned off, turn it back on at about:addons.

The question keeps coming back

The browser asks again if it was closed without an answer. Open a new tab, wait for the question, and click Keep it (Keep changes on Edge, Keep Changes on Firefox).

New tabs don’t open in incognito or private windows

Chrome and Edge keep their own new tab in incognito and InPrivate windows, and no extension can change that. Your normal windows are unaffected.

Firefox runs extensions in private windows only if you allow it: at about:addons, open Tabshift and set Run in Private Windows to Allow.

A file on my computer won’t open

In Firefox, it can’t: Firefox doesn’t let extensions open files from your computer. In Chrome and Edge:

The browser needs your OK first. Tabshift shows Open extension settings when it’s missing: turn on Allow access to file URLs there. Also check that the file is still where it was.

Typing goes into the page, not the address bar

In Tabshift’s Settings, under Where the cursor goes, choose Address bar. “The page” is for sites with their own search box: your typing goes into the page. Firefox always puts the cursor in the address bar, so there’s no such setting there.

Tabshift says it can’t open an address

Browsers don’t let extensions open some kinds of address, like data: and javascript:. Tabshift says so rather than failing quietly. Pages on the web, your own machine (localhost) work everywhere. In Chrome and Edge, so do files and the browser’s own pages (chrome://bookmarks). Firefox keeps those to itself.

There’s a “Customize Chrome” button at the bottom of the page

Chrome draws it on any extension’s new tab page: on Tabshift’s first new tab, the page you see after Back, and the blank page. It’s browser furniture, and Tabshift can’t remove it. Your chosen page never shows it.

The bookmarks bar doesn’t show on new tabs any more

“Show bookmarks bar on the new tab page only” applies to the browser’s own new tab. Once your new tab is a website, choose Always show bookmarks bar instead (⌘⇧B on a Mac, Ctrl+Shift+B elsewhere). In Firefox, choose View, then Toolbars, then Bookmarks Toolbar, then Always Show.

The shortcuts don’t do anything

Another extension may already use them. Pick different keys at chrome://extensions/shortcuts (or edge://extensions/shortcuts). In Firefox, open about:addons, click the gear and choose Manage Extension Shortcuts. That’s also where you can give “Next page” a shortcut.

My pages didn’t follow me to another computer

They travel with browser sync. Check that you’re signed in to the same profile with sync turned on (in Firefox, Firefox Sync), then give it a minute.

Why does the browser say Tabshift can replace my new tab?

That’s the one permission every new tab extension needs, and it’s the only warning Tabshift shows. Firefox shows no warning at all; its first new tab tells you once that the page changed. Tabshift can’t see the sites you visit. See the privacy policy.
